Frequently asked questions

Questions and Answers

How often should I see the dentist?

In general, we advise our patients to schedule a check-up twice a year. This can, however, vary from person to person, depending on your oral health. Why are regular check-ups important? During a check-up we can detect problems early, such as: Cavities (caries): Small cavities can quickly develop into bigger problems if they are not treated in time. Tartar: Plaque that hardens into tartar can only be removed by us. Gum problems: Healthy gums are essential for a strong and healthy set of teeth. Wear: Your biting and chewing habits can affect the condition of your teeth. By coming in regularly, you prevent small problems from growing into major treatments. What if I'm afraid of the dentist? Do you struggle with dental anxiety? We understand that, and we're glad to help you with it. In our practice we take our time for you and provide a calm and personal approach, so that you feel at ease.

What do we do during a check-up?

During a dental check-up we examine your teeth carefully to assess the overall health of your mouth. What do we check? Teeth and molars: Are there cavities or signs of wear? Tartar and plaque: If necessary, we remove these right away. Gums: Are your gums healthy and free of inflammation? Alignment of your teeth: Are there crooked teeth or other orthodontic problems? If necessary, we also take X-rays to detect problems such as hidden cavities or inflammation early. Why are X-rays important? With X-rays we get a complete picture of your teeth, including areas we cannot see with the naked eye. This way we can discover and treat problems quickly.

What can I do about toothache?

Toothache can have various causes, and it is important to act quickly. Possible causes: Cavities: When tooth decay reaches the nerves, this can cause pain. Gum inflammation: This can lead to pain and discomfort. Root inflammation: A more serious condition in which the tooth nerve becomes inflamed. Trauma: A hard knock to your tooth can cause damage. What can you do about toothache? Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce bacteria. Use a painkiller such as paracetamol for temporary relief. Avoid sweet, acidic or hard food that can make the pain worse. Contact us as soon as possible, so that we can find the cause and start a suitable treatment.

What should I do if I break a tooth?

A broken tooth can happen unexpectedly, for example from a fall or biting on something hard. What should you do? Rinse your mouth gently with lukewarm water to remove dirt and blood. Keep the broken piece of tooth in milk or saliva. Contact us right away. At Tandartspraktijk Voorschoten we do our best to help you the same day in case of an emergency.

How do I prevent dental problems?

Prevention is better than cure. Good oral hygiene is the foundation for a healthy set of teeth. Daily care: Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily to remove plaque between your teeth. Use a fluoride mouthwash for extra protection. Dietary advice: Limit sugary snacks and drinks. Choose healthy alternatives such as vegetables, fruit and nuts. Drink plenty of water, especially after eating. Regular check-ups: Schedule regular check-ups with us, so that we can spot any problems early.

What are the benefits of a professional cleaning?

In addition to your daily oral care, a professional cleaning is essential. During a cleaning we remove tartar and stubborn plaque to prevent gum problems. How does a cleaning work? We remove tartar with special instruments. Your teeth are polished, so that they stay smooth and clean. When is a cleaning needed? Do you notice that your gums bleed while brushing or flossing? This can be a sign of inflammation. A professional cleaning helps to improve your oral health.

How do I prepare my child for a dental visit?

A healthy mouth begins at a young age. We are happy to help children get to know the dentist in a positive way. Tips for parents: Start young: Bring your child to our practice from the age of two. Make it fun: Explain in a playful way what is going to happen. Set a good example: Show that you come for check-ups regularly yourself. At Tandartspraktijk Voorschoten we make sure children feel at ease during their visit.
